My favourite coffee: a long espresso shot with some steamed milk, served in a little glass. My favourite one in Toronto is from Manic Coffee, at College and Bathurst. I picked up my share from KEG this afternoon and in it I got carrots, potatoes, sunchokes (aka Jerusalem artichokes), lentil sprouts (from 5 different kinds of lentils!), lettuce, salad greens, wild leeks, and green onions. With my share, I also get a $20 credit that I can use to buy anything else from the [...] As you know, I made lots of butter this weekend. Looking for something to do with it other than spreading it on bread, I came across this recipe from Smitten Kitchen. It seemed perfect in every way – unless you have high cholesterol and want to lose lots of weight fast; but in that case, [...] I made butter again today – this time I timed the whole process to give you a more precise set of instructions. It seems I was too overly enthusiastic about the whole thing – the whole process takes about 15 minutes rather than 5. Here’s what I used: A plastic container, heavy cream, and two [...] I attended a Slow Food Toronto event this Saturday aimed at introducing people to Community Shared Agriculture options around Toronto as well as other food initiatives such as the awesome Greenest City initiative in Parkdale, here in TO. It was also great to hang out with Shannon Holton from KEG. But the highlight of the [...] The academic year of 2004/2005 was a busy one for me. I took five graduate courses in the Fall and four in the Spring (the normal workload in my program is 2-2, some people do 3-3). I wasn’t sure I could do it – or whether I should do it but in the end, it [...] Continuing from part 1 – The first loaf didn’t rise enough and judging by the after taste, I suspect it didn’t cook enough either. It was ok with some very strong cheese though. Since the only bread flour I had was whole wheat, I started another batch with 100% whole wheat flour. This one showed [...] Remember these lovely mix of potatoes that I got in my CSA this week? After a quick browse through Bittman’s How to Cook Everything Vegetarian, I came across a recipe for potato provençal. It seemed easy enough – rub 2lb potatoes clean, slice them, slice 2-3 tomatoes, place them in a large baking dish with [...] |
