Browsing through Mark Bittman’s Food Matters Cookbook, I came across this recipe for a tomato crisp. I had seen other recipes for tomato crisp in the past but they often rely on simply breadcrumbs and butter. Bittman’s addition of oats, olive oil, cheese, and nuts proved too irresistible. It was very easy to make since [...] A paella is not a specific recipe but simply baked rice. In Spain it is traditionally made in an open fire but in modern kitchens you can make it in the oven or even a bbq. Ironically enough, I got to this recipe looking for something to do with eggs. I have some eggs to [...] I’ve thought for a while on whether I would blog about meatless mondays. It’s a great initiative to get people more conscious of the amount of meat they eat and how to have great-tasting meals without any meat whatsoever. I haven’t really followed meatless mondays since I’m at the point where I have whole meatless [...] I have started getting emails from concerned friends who follow this blog. My posting has gone down drastically over the past few months. There are two main reasons for this. One is that I confess I was simply uninspired over the past couple of months, particularly after summer share with the Kawartha Ecological Growers ended [...] I’ve been wanting to grow food ever since reading Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle last summer. I brushed the notion aside to the realm of “things I’d like to do if I lived in a place with a bit more space and if I had more time.” I was also discouraged by my past attempts [...] I first heard of Slow Food International when I lived in Barcelona through an interview with Carlo Petrini in a local newspaper. It was a short interview but Petrini’s brief description of how he decided to do something to fight fast food and a fast life stayed with me. While driving home in Italy, he [...] I made butter again today – this time I timed the whole process to give you a more precise set of instructions. It seems I was too overly enthusiastic about the whole thing – the whole process takes about 15 minutes rather than 5. Here’s what I used: A plastic container, heavy cream, and two [...] I attended a Slow Food Toronto event this Saturday aimed at introducing people to Community Shared Agriculture options around Toronto as well as other food initiatives such as the awesome Greenest City initiative in Parkdale, here in TO. It was also great to hang out with Shannon Holton from KEG. But the highlight of the [...] Continuing from part 1 – The first loaf didn’t rise enough and judging by the after taste, I suspect it didn’t cook enough either. It was ok with some very strong cheese though. Since the only bread flour I had was whole wheat, I started another batch with 100% whole wheat flour. This one showed [...] |
